Sorry--I fell behind in the responses to this.

I'm trying the above right now.  I'm up to downloading Webkit again.   
(The first part works right---getting rid of WebKit and making Safari  
the default--clicking e-mail links uses the already open Safari and  
doesn't make new instances of it.)

I'll report on the rest in a moment. . .
