Due to the configuration of my house, I went with ethernet over the power lines. I picked up 3 units by Panasonic for, iirc, $60 total. One of these plugs into your router and the wall. The rest plug into an ethernet port on your computer and the wall. Supposedly, the units I have also can handle NAT and you can run up to 5 devices off of one remote unit with a hub. They are rated for about 70Mb/s, slower than 100Mb/s ethernet, but way faster than the 15Mb/s that I get from Comcast. I have tested my setup with the Speakeasy speed test, and I get the same throughput with my Mac over the power lines as I get with a win box direct connected to the cable modem. I do not know if there is one standard and it is interoperable between brands, though. All in all, I am very happy with ethernet over power lines.
