 From your description of the monitor, it sounds like you have an ADC  
monitor with a couple of USB ports on the back of it. I've seen  
instances where problems with those USB connectors caused an ADC  
monitor to put a G5 in a coma. It's possible that the reverse is  
happening to you. On the other hand, your console logs keep  
referencing your ethernet card. So I'd try:

1) Try hooking up a regular VGA monitor and see if the G4 will sleep  
then.
2a) Try unplugging your ethernet cable -and-
2b) Make sure you have no networking apps running in the background  
(e.g., Bittorrent clients.)
