Going back to the original restore disks, if you could find them, would put you back to OS 10.2 which is not where you want to be. And OS 10.3 Panther is pretty obsolete these days. On the other hand, any used retail set of 10.4 Tiger, or 10.5 Leopard will do fine on any model of the MDD, provided it has sufficient RAM, 512 MB at least. Retail sets are black in color, not grey. If you want to keep the door open for using OS 9.2.2 some day, be sure to check the box in Disk Utility for the OS 9 drivers when you reinitialize the drive.
