Is the G3 depending on AppleTalk to see the printers? If so, this
could be the problem, 10.5 doesn't support appletalk and newer
printers do not, either. Does the 6490 need to run a special driver to
commnicate over the network (there are several models of HP printer
that do) Does the G3 need a driver installed (the installed drivers
are different for 10.5 and 10.4)

Start with the basics. Find out the IP address of the DeskJet. (A self
test should print out the JetDirect settings) and see if you can ping
it from the G3. If so you know you can 'see' the printer, network-
wise; that eliminates communication as an issue.

(you can either just open a Terminal window and type

ping -c3 ip.address.of.printer

or use the Network Utility in /Applications/Utilities)

The separate wireless segment shouldn't have anything to do with the
problem...different network adapter, but wierder things have happened.
If you cannot ping the printer try shutting that part off.
