This is good, certainly not getting 'nowhere fast'.

This explains why the G3 doesn't find it. Can you ping it from the G4?  
I'll wager you can.

Compare the G3's and G4's tcp/ip settings (gateway and netmask in  
particular), they should be the same other than IP address.

Also compare the Jetdirect's TCP/IP settings.

Try pinging all the other devices (both computers, both printers) on  
your network from both computers.
