(Your possible HD issues aside) The "hang" at the spinning gear, after an Apple update, is usually because their installer farks the cache clearing task. This is a looooong outstanding standing bug that Apple just seems to ignore.... Booting into Safe Mode (by holding down the Shift key), clears the system and kernel caches then rebuilds them.
