Have had no trouble running my scanner with the pre X software that came with it, in Classic. The software is called ScanWizard and the scanner a ScanMaker x12. It runs via a USB 2 card on my Tiger machine. Odd thing though, Classic fires up fine but when I tried (first time in a year or two!) to boot into 9 this morning off a volume that is dedicated to 9, it could not recognise the Volume and asked if I wanted to initialise it? I was not sure what to do and left it. I used to be able to boot into 9 on this machine.
