The PowerPC 970 (what Apple called the "G5") was physically too big,
too hot, and sucked too much power. It was a desktop/server grade
processor, not designed for laptops at all. The intention was that
Moto/Freescale would re-work it for laptops, but they failed.

Meanwhile, IBM moved on to bigger and better things in its Power line
(remember, PowerPC is a subset of POWER). They "lost interest" in
Apple's puny need for PowerPC, as the ones they had were ample for
their needs in the embedded market.

Keep in mind the difference between the hardware platform and the
operating system that runs upon it. It's *Windows* that has the
problems, NOT the PC platform. Except for running EFI instead of
BIOS, all our x86 Macs *ARE* PCs. And as the general PC market moves
to true 64-bit, they're switching to EFI also!
