I had some friends in the past leave their computer on and online on a 
website they were checking out all night and they all had to clean the drive 
and reinstall but they all had PC's and this was happening about 4-5 yrs ago 
when everyone was getting cable internet... Another thing that isn't good to do 
is download your e-mail to your computer via Outlook etc etc etc... I always 
check my e-mail in webmail (on earthlink's website in my case)... I'm not sure 
how all this works (hackers spyware phishing) so I don't take any chances... I 
never had any problems in the 17yrs I've been using computers and surfing the 
internet, my first computer 1993 Mac Performa 475 with that old time ph modem 
your had to lay your ph on and it would take around 2 hrs to get online...
