First, a hearty thanks to all that responded.

Today I made a trip to Altex Electronics and bought 6' and 10' USB  
extension cables.  I figured that if need be, I could insert a  
powered hub at the 6' distance.  The benefit of all this was to place  
the USB modem in a window free of foliage etc.  Didn't use the hub  
but got the results below:

Wow!  Two solid bars and a connection speed of 1843200 bps.

I think that this is it!  I'll try it on the 400MHz Gigabit in the  
next couple of days since that is where I have most of my files etc.
