Perfectly true of course Adrian like Bruces' comments but I think the good
thing about threads like this every now and again is that it reminds everyone
to have a backup strategy in place and to implement it.
I have been amazed at how many companies I have come in contact with ( I am not
an IT pro just an enthusiastic amateur who seems to be the fixit guy for
friends , neighbours etc ) that have no backups in place and they include a
couple with twenty to thirty employees !

Ummm... I have witnessed irrevocable data loss from each and every one

of those scenarios.

The key questions to ask yourself:

How much is my stuff worth to me?

How much will it cost me to recreate all of it?

If your answer to the second question involved financing research into

practical methods of time travel, you need a better backup strategy.

Besides, corporations, Google and the Internet Archive are keeping the

hard drive industry afloat. Drive sales to individual users are a

vanishingly small segment of the industry.

tongue in cheek ( even when rather true) is lost here right?

Of course we need backups if we have data to protect. That is a given.

But look at the page that was backlinked. Look at the links off of that.

My comments were more about the page linked to and the motivations and agendas
that they represent. I suppose I have studied media production too long and see
and hear people with their suggestions in my ears and eyes rather than a friend
giving me sage advice that's all.

Yes by all means, do backups. Abso-posi-lutely!

But do we really need to be told this by an ad filled with ads disguised as a
magazine?

Layers of irony like those of an onion were at play when I saw that linked page.

And it is perfectly alright for me to express this queasiness, when I see the
24/7/365 oversell we are subjected to in daily life.
