I personally install a second hard drive in all my desktop computers .
This is so I can perform maintenance tasks by booting up from the second hard
drive and for more importantly , backing up my data off the primary drive.
Then I hitch up my Firewire drive and back up to that as well. I do this at the
end of every day.
At the end of each week I lug my partners FW drive around and back up all my
data to that as well , returning that to her the following morning.
When I have enough data to fill a DVD or CD I burn that to disc and store it in
her garage, usually wiping the data off her drive.
A bit too far you think - maybe, but I have had a few hard drive failures and
seen a lot of Raid arrays go South in the past as well as numerous fires and
theft from homes and businesses.
I have also had a friend who suffered a lightning strike on his home and apart
from his stereo and TV being fried, lost his computer with two internal drives
and two connected external hard drives. No recovery possible. All his data from
7+ years gone - family photos , songs , client records.
Have I ever lost any of my or clients data - yes, but I have always been able
to restore it from a backup.
