Also most of the drives have a small activity light on the front of the housing if you put in a disk and hold the door open you should be able to see if there is any response on the light.
Another thing I would do is put the drive in an enclosure or another machine to test it. they are easy to get out of the MDDs. You also might try the 66 bus on the optical drive if it is open. I run my drives in my MDD on the 66 bus. the factory puts them on the 33.
