Replacements are cheap enough that it's senseless to spend much time
trying all the stuff you've been told to do. OS X doesn't fail like
this, but optical drives do, regularly. They're the most mechanically
complex and fallible part of a computer, and for a long time they've
been seriously commodity items, which means corners get cut routinely
in manufacture.
Frys Electronics has a Pioneer DVD- R-RW for $29:

Some googling produced a Lite-ON DL drive for $32

I would get the Pioneer drive. I have had very good luck with them. I just
had to RMA two Samsung LightScribe drives from OWC. They failed too many burns
and the LightScribe feature required two passes. Be sure to get a IDE PATA
They are getting more scarce at some of the Fry's stores, the one near me only
has the Liteon. I get all my drives from OWC or Newegg.
