You're kidding..right?
Have you heard a G5 DP at full tilt? I'm half ready to believe his
tall tale.
The only Apple system that I've used that was worse was a G5 XServe.
Rack servers as a rule sound like they're running turbofans off a
DC-10 mounted in the back to cool them. we had a small (about 15x25)
office with four people and about 20 rackmount servers going in it. It
was always very hot, and we've all suffered hearing losses and
tinnitus as a result of our years 'in the box'. Our new office has the
servers off in a back room, and we can still hear the roar in the
front part where we sit.
Do the thermal calibration. Your ears will stop bleeding and thank you
for it..
Some time ago I ran Applejack in single user mode on my dual 2.0 G5.
Naturally that part of OSX which controls the fans doesn't load, so
after a few minutes it seemed like I had 74 vacuum cleaners hidden under
the desk and all running!
Keeps my cats off the keyboard though - but I couldn't live with that
noise more than once in a while, and then only for a short time.
Just my experience,
