I have successfully booted OS 9 from a USB flash drive before, but here is why i was able to. External USB drives (not flash drives) use their own power supply, and require an OS to be used or seen. Flash drives work as if they were internal drives, but slower. I did install OS 9 to USB, it worked. I did try tiger through on an 8GB flash drive. It worked, but it was SLOW when it came to retrieving system files. Other than that, it works for me.
