These external USB HDs WILL boot. You must attach the HD prior to
booting and have it fully powered up prior to starting the Mac. Hold
the Option key at startup to select the USB drive. You can also select
the USB drive from Apple Startup Disk if you're booted in OS 9, but
this WILL NOT work with Startup Disk in OS X. Using the Option key is
the best idea.
