Nearly all my drives - both internal and two mounted in a couple of FW cases -
are Pioneer brand - 115s and 118s, mostly because they seem to need fewer
patches or firmware updates to work straight out of the box for Macs.
The biggest error most people seem to make in my opinion is that they select
too higher a burn speed or the drive doesn't have enough buffer underun
protection.
It also depends on what machine you are running these off too.
A faster machine can keep the data up to the burner more than fast enough to
prevent problems when recording.
Throttle your burn speed back to something like 8X and I bet you have more
success.
I use Imation and TDK media and haven't had much of a problem with either.
