Most of us in the UK are on ADSL or Cable (available in metropolitan areas). Only a relatively few rural areas still have no option but dial-up, although that should change over the next 2 - 5 years.
Speaking as a graphic designer, I keep graphics for commercial use - where they have a valid purpose - and use plain text for communication.
