If you want to use thermal paste you will need to clean the CPU and heatsink. I usually start by scraping with an old plastic credit card edge, then scrub with acetone (or fingernail polish remover) on a cotton swab followed by ethanol or rubbing alcohol. When you apply the new paste use a very small amount, about the size of a grain of rice, and spread it thinly with a piece of stiff, soft plastic. Be careful not to scratch the surface of the CPU or the heatsink.
