Thanks a lot, Andreas, for your good thoughts. The link about thermal paste is good, and yes, I did get myself some Arctic Silver... While experimenting, I’ve done several swaps of the processors and now feel like a pro in applying that stuff ;-)
My situation is indeed different, because one of the first times I started up that Mac, I checked the processor speed in About this Mac and it correctly read 1GHz. I think something’s really wrong with that Sonnet, not just the speed setting. So I’ve given up on that thing, also because another GigE is being sent to me, this time described as working, with a 2x500MHz processor. It costs less than 30$ and even has a DVD-ROM inside.
