Anecdotal... but I'd venture that many usb sticks go bad because people can't be bothered to (or don't know to) wipe off / clean the contacts or anything. The sticks gets stashed in fairly hostile environments - pockets, purses, etc, collecting crud. Shove 'em into the socket, they short out, gersparken, poof.
