A G4 what? Fully updated Tiger? Details please, including something about the internal bus configs. And what external peripherals are connected? ...The inability of a Mac to sleep or wake properly is usually caused by one or more devices or cards not behaving as expected.

Does the machine sleep and wake properly if all the external peripherals, except display keyboard and mouse, are disconnected?

Are there any messages being thrown into system.log?

If I shut down, it will not turn on unless I reset the PMU.

hum. That makes me think something internal is failing hard, and locking up a bus. What pci cards do you have installed? Definately check the system log.

Can I replace the PMU?

The Power Management Unit is a small cpu and other chips on the motherboard, near the CUDA button. (The CUDA button is actually the PMU's hard reset/boot switch). It is not really replaceable.

Battery replaced. Checked ram. Checked cards. Checked cables. Checked power supply.

Ok. Good start. Check the system log for errors - that will often point to the thing that's giving problem. Then start removing variables, disconnect external devices, etc.

No. I don`t want to give this to Apple for repair. I want to troubleshoot and repair myself. I realize the opposition from Apple, but where there is a problem, there is a cogent solution.

Noone here will suggest you give an ancient Mac to Apple for repair. Their bench fee is usually more than the cost of replacing the machine! if they'll even look at such an old beastie.
