If you have an early 2003 G4 iMac 800 it will not boot OS9. If a 2002 and earlier 800 then I would proceed . If you can make a CCC of the drive to test, first initialize the external drive Apple partition Map including the OS9 driver using Tiger. Then CCC the drive from the iMac to the fresh firewire external it should boot from the fresh CCC in the external. There are other ways too but this may be the fastest and safest at the moment.
