I think this is much more likely the cause then missing thermal paste.
If you haven't removed the heat sink yet, I would forget about it for
now and first look into this.
FM Pro saves after each record update -- at least it does in version
3. That means it saves when you click on another record than the one
you were just editing. So you could try to click away, to a different
record, before switching to WriteNow to make FM save the changes to
disk.

Also, FM Pro uses a lot of RAM, and WriteNow may be misbehaving in
using RAM. Is WriteNow 32-bit clean? Could you use another word
processor instead of WriteNow?
