I used 10.3.9 years ago, and I don't remember noticeable slowing down when I

Not really.
Classic is completely integrated into OSX, while SheepShaver is a "hack"
with several bugs and glitches, AFAIK.

SS can be "better than nothing", but having Classic is way better, IMHO.
