I have not checked the firmware but suspect since it was recent refurb it
should be current. I will check however.
Your ftp link did not work. No problem however, read on.
Upon reading the manual the printer uses LaserWriter 8 for a driver in OS 8.6
and OS 9. The problem is the PPD which would have been supplied on the install
CD is missing.
I did not get anything useful from Google searching "HP 5100 driver". Then I
tried searching "HP Laserjet OS 9 PPD" and got a hit for a HP 5000, the
predecessor to the 5100. The link led to helpdriver.com. Navigating thru
printers>HP>Laserjet 5000, provided a free download which I believe is the same
file provided by your ftp link (jlegacyen.hqx)
The installation installed many LaserJet PPD's including the LaserJet 5100. So
I'm good.
On a side note I tried tried another PPD from a GCC XL/1200 1200 dpi printer.
The HP 5100 replaced an aging GCC XL/1200 another monochrome printer. The GCC
PDD gave me the necessary features as well. I assume both PPD's were written
in the same language. I think it is Adobe Postscript 4 (point something)
Interesting exercise with a good result. Of course I could have saved the
legacy files as a PDF and print from another networked G4 with OS X -- na'h too
much work. --glen
