It may take a while for more lines to appear, or the degradation may happen more quickly. About all you can do is use a second screen as the rest of the iMac itself will continue to work perfectly. On the other hand, I was asked recently to refurb two early-2006 17" Intel iMacs. They have perfect LCDs, but bad logic boards. Fortunately, because of the 17" iMac Bad Screen Plague, it's much, much less costly to replace a logic board than an LCD. As I said, been there, done all of that.
