I agree popularity of a game is a complex matter, and that challenge is important, however one thing I do find interesting is what you say about character.

As you know, i often played gmes for plot, exploration and story, and frequently got very invested with characters like Samas Aran, or the cast of street fighter 2, making up stories to myself about them etc.

With the mega man series (which as you know I'm a big fan of), I found myself enjoying the games far more when i actually understood what was going on, had sat down and got the manuals ooff the internet etc.

One thing I've noticed in audio games is that we don't have many games with strong characters, but that some of the most memorable titles get remembered precisely for those characters.

Superliam and Q9 are very notable examples, although interestingly enough some other games like Kirtwolf or Airic the clerric don't seem to have done quite as well in this respect.

Beware the grue!
