Howdy,
    An interesting--and so far for me very nice--alternative to Adrift is 
Inform 7.  That's at:
www.inform-fiction.org
You want I7, not I6.  It's still programming, but it's very different, and 
much more powerful than Adrift.  Not to mention it's free.
