To be honest sean, the only game genres that the audio games markit seems to have a serfit of imho, are space invaders games, Tenis games, and audio conversions of card games, word games and puzles like sudoku.
There are many other sorts of arcade style games besides space invaders ones. I'm fairly certain arena based shooters like smash Tv, Berzerk and Robotron would convert exceptionally well into audio, as probably would free roaming shooters like Chaos engine or gauntlet, these are all arcade games. Then there are the various sorts of beat em ups, side scrolling or one on one that would normally be classed as arcade games, and yet we haven't really seen any of these types of games in audio. Even in the matter of spaceship games, there are many other possible varieties of game besides space invaders to convert as torrent is doing with Galaxians. Expand the bonus stage of Troop 2 and you could have a highly workable audio version of luna lander or missile command for example. finally, I wouldn't want to discourage the creation of audio games even in the overcrowded game types mentioned above. Other than Bg hearts and the imho slightly expensive Bridge Barran game, there aren't many audio trick taking games around, particularly the more complex ones like Spades, Whist or Oh hell. I also wouldn't mind another game that would give me the oppertunity to learn bridge without having to pay for bridge barran as well (yes! I'm a cheap skate!). then, I don't believe there are any rummy or canasta style card games at all yet. In word games, I think we're stil awaiting an audio scrabble, ----- though Bg boggle certainly comes close. then of course, the multi-player aspects of these games have not been fully explored either. I personally tend to ffind all the Tenis style games, from Showdown to super tenis play basically the same way, with different sounds, but I will admit sports games aren't precisely my thing so I could well be a bad judge of this game type. Even in the extremely over populated world of audio Space invaders clones, I certainly wouldn't dismiss any new offering that came onto the seen. Take Judgement day for example. Yes, it's a space invaders game with familiar enemies, however the amount of unlockables, different challenges and minigames serve to distinguish it from others of the genre imho. I would agree though that a dev would probably have to do some very hard thinking and good design work to create a unique game of this type. then of course, there are audio games that, instead of beeing conversions of sited games, take definite advantage of the medium, which is always a good thing.
