Hi Phil, Yeah, I myself have found the fire places very handy for orienting myself in the rooms that have them. Speaking of night time wouldn't they have a few fires lit at night for lighting? After all we are talking a very old castle driven by magic so simply flipping on light switches, a muggle thing, isn't likely. So they'd have to use lanterns or fire places for no other purpose than to light some of the rooms at night. Also my guess is this is early night fall as Filch is sstill awake, Dobby appears to be doing something in the kitchen, and several others are out and about. As for the ghosts they never sleep so my conclusion it is dark enough to need lighting but not time for bed.
