Hello listers,
First, I would like to apologize to everyone who may have been offended
by my previous posts to this list. I can only say I have tried my best
to make my messages as informative as possible, and as truthful as I
understood the facts. It was never my intention to inflame, insult, put
down,or in any way target a person or persons in a condescending way.
Though, it seams my words have offended some on this list anyway.
As to Jim yes you are right. I should have tested more games before
writing to this list and singling out your games. That was wrong, and I
am sorry for that.
As to Che you are also right in saying there has been way too much talk
of game programming on list, and not enough discussion of playing games.
I feel my debates on which programming languages are best for carrying
audio gaming on into the future using Windows Vista and beyond has done
more harm than good. Instead of being informative they have been
received as critical and insulting to developers to using other
technologies. Sorry developers if I seamed too critical. I only wanted
to insure that future games are written to meet not just todays
requirements, but be ready for tomorrows needs as well.
This is not an excuse for my poor behavior by any means, but this will
aid in explaining why I am so for staying with current trends. All of my
adult life I have not been one for staying behind technology wise. I
almost always upgrade applications, programming language skills, etc as
they become available. That explains why I am one of the few developers
out there who is running Windows Vista, developing using C# .Net 2005,
and using software which my fellow game developers probably don't have
yet. I honestly have little patients with programmers that are still
developing using tools and languages that are years out of date which
has resulted in me being a bit short with some of our friendly
neighborhood developers.
As to my friendly fellow moderator, Raul, I have read your post
regarding system security. You are right system security best practices
should be taken off list, and I will do so. Though, I will simply say
that I am truly saddened by the little thought most users put in to
Windows security. Not just the game developers, blind users, but the
entire Windows user base as a whole. It has been my experience when it
comes to good Windows security most Windows users are just clueless.
As a case in point earlier this year I did some work for a lady in
Holmesville. Her HP computer was down do to multiple virus infections.
It appears she got antivirus software with her computer, but she never
updated it, never configured it, and merrily went on her way on the
internet thinking she was protected. I ended up product recovering the
system, installing AVG 7.5 on there, put on some antispyware software,
antispam tools, etc and then taught her how to update and use the stuff
to keep the system clean and safe. She literally was absolutely clueless
about the stuff I showed her. She just thought you installed the
software, and it ran. Never knowing you have to upgrade it, configure
it, and use different tools to defend from all kinds of attacks.
It is this ignorance of system security I am so passionate to get rid
of. I'm so frustrated in end users getting a brand new computer,
pressing the on button, and treating it with no more thought to its
safety or proper use. Then, they wonder why it gets messed up.
Anyway, I have said all I should say, and I will step down off my soap
box now.
