Hi Phil,
As it happens it was Indiana Jones and the Temple Of Doom. The Temple Of
Doom was released in 1984 around the time Atari released Montezuma's
Revenge. As you pointed out many of the key elements were in the game as
was seen in the film. For example, the lava pit the priests tried to
drop Willy Scott into, the torches on the walls in the temple, and of
course the secret room with the spiked floors and ceiling. There is no
doubt the movie had to have inspired the game.
In fact, Montezuma's Revenge isn't the only game that was a copyright
free version of Indiana Jones. The guy who drafted Tomb Raider and Lara
Croft for Edos Interactive has publically stated his initial draft was
of a game based on Indiana Jones. As the team worked on the project they
decided it would be better to come up with a female as the leading roll,
the game would be as much puzzle based as combat oriented, and they of
course wrote their own story lines and host of supporting characters.
However, the fact remains Edos got something almost as popular as
Indiana Jones without having to pay Lucas for the rights to it. Popular
enough to have two films and 8 games based off that one idea.
Well, if it can work for Edos, Atari, etc I should be able to pull off
the same stunt too.
Now, Temple of Doom? Man that would be a really cool name for the game
right there, but that is really drifting a bit far from the original game.
