Thanks for the informative response Chrissy. Oh yes I am very well aware that these mainstream games are largely not going to be playable by us to the same degree as a sighted person and we are for the most part not going to be very competetive to our sighted friends on them. That is not particularly important to me what is important is that I can at least tell what is going on and what I am doing enough so that I do not get completely fed up and quit, something that I don't do very easily. I've been blind since birth myself, however I had no blind friends when I was growing up, I hung out with the sighted kids and wanted to play the games that my friends were playing on their Atari 2600's and all that, , for that reason I've been fooling around with mainstream games for 20 plus years, I'm very experienced with mainstream consoles up to the NES and the Nintendo 64 but I basically gave up trying to keep up with them after that.
The more I hear about this system the more interesting it seems. Like I say I think I am gonna see if one of my nephew's buddies has one that he will let me check out, either that or I suppose I could just go to a store and try to check one out there. Your point about buying used games is a very good one and I would definitely go that route if I do decide to pick one of these things up which I am definitely seriously considering. I have not been blind since birth so I did have just about every console out until the last generation, which fell into the period when I lost the rest of my sight completely, so I was out of touch with consoles for a while. I think I may have the advantage that I know the set up of most consoles by heart, i.e. the menues and stuff, so I know where to go most times. on psp, for example it is a little try and error most times, but most games for it are very straight forward, menuewise. in tekken once you managed to get thru the basic menue points it will say a lot about the happenings on the scree, like "selct yout character", et cetera. When you do play mainstream console games, that are of course aimed at sighted gamers, you will encounter obstacles and the game experience will and cannot ever be the same one for us, that a sighted gamer has. if you keep that in mind, then you are all set:) still I think that on some games I can get enough enjoyment out of it to justify buying them. I buy used ones most times anyways. With those games it is mostly about learning the layout and the sounds of a game to get anywhere. Tekken for example is pretty good to learn when you are patient enough to take the time. I even win quite a lot of fights, even in higher stages :) So I guess it is up to the individual how bad you want to take a shot at those games. Some do have awesome storylines and sounds, which I really enjoy. I so want to try and play the new God of war for psp, even if it is just for the story and sounds, I have to say what people say about its accessibility. I guess since it is an adventure hack and slay game, it will be kind of hard to figure out. Like you said the psp has the advantage that you can store all kinds of data as well as music on it. Who knows maybe some soul will eventually go thru the trouble and develop some kind of screenreader for a handheld console, like my talks that I have in my phone. Would be too cool, I guess the market is way too small for this too happen, at least for a reasonable price. Anyway I am happy with my psp and do not regret the purchase at all. well, those are some of my thoughts, have a great day! take care chrissy --- Gamers mailing list __ [email protected] If you want to leave the list, send E-mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] You can make changes or update your subscription via the web, at http://audyssey.org/mailman/listinfo/gamers_audyssey.org.
