Hi Tyler,
Interesting you should ask that. As a matter of fact I can tell you
exactly where Tomb Raider came from. Here is the history of the games,
movies, books, etc as I know it.
Back in 1995/1996, shortly after Edos Interactive took over core Design,
the Core Design team was looking into the idea of creating a game along
the same theme/design as Indiana Jones. The only problem was that Lucas
Arts held all rights to the Indiana Jones video game market, and
licensing fees would be way to high for Edos Interactive/Core Design to
afford. it was around this time Lucas Arts had released a block buster
Indiana Jones PC game for dos where Indiana Jones finds the lost
continent of Atlantis. Edos and Core Design also wanted to cash in on
that type of game, but avoid any licensing and copyright issues in the
process.
To make a long story short two Core Design employees, Toby Gard and Paul
Douglas, came up with the story idea about a female action hero named
Lara Croft who is hired to tract down a lost artifact from Atlantis.
Instead of being a doctor of archeology like Indiana Jones they made her
the daughter of a famous archaeologist who taught her archeology. Lara
Croft differs from Indiana Jones in that she was originally designed as
a mersonary treasure hunter for hire with mastery of all kinds of fire
arms and explosives. Edos Interactive approved the Tomb Raider
character, game story, and one of the greatest game series of all time
was born. Later games in the series then stated she was a fully credited
archaeologist, but her mersonary action hero status was firmly set with
her fan base.
While the story line and game character were certainly cool the Core
Design graphics designers aided the games success by adding in extra sex
appeal to their new female action hero. They picked a fairly sexy mottle
to pose for the Lara Croft photo shoot, and I heard they intentionally
increased her breast size to give Lara Croft her most famous
attributes. yes, we guys could not help looking at them as we played her
games. Simply too much eye candy to look at.
Ahem... anyway, the first Tomb Raider game was a block buster success
for Edos Interactive and Core Design. The Tomb Raider games were selling
like hot cakes and Tomb Raider fans were already screaming for an
encore. Tomb Raider II was released a year later and sold over eight
million copies making it one of the top selling games of the 1990's.Even
today it remains among one of the best games sold in video gaming history.
To tell you exactly how popular these games are the first six games
broke the world record selling thirty-five million copies over a seven
year period. Two full length movies has been produced, five full length
novels, 50 comic books, a short run of action figures, and the series is
still going. Edos has recently announced the development of Tomb Raider
Underworld scheduled to hit stores before the 2008 Christmas season.
The bottom line it has a fan base almost as big as that of Indiana
Jones, and it will be interesting to see how it compares to Lucas Arts
game for Indiana Jones and the Crystal Skull.
