Hi Phil,
Well, for as long as I can remember I have been a really big history
buff. As a result I have the History Channel, History International, and
National Geographic, on my list of top watched stations. I heard about
KV-64 back in 2006 when National Geographic did a documentary on the
discovery of KV-63 and the evidence of KV-64 near to Tutankhamun's tomb.
Until archaeologists open the tomb no one has any idea what is down
there. The hypothesis it is Queen Nefertiti's long-sot tomb is just a
hypothesis. The only reason some archaeologists think itmight be her
tomb is its location to Tutankhamun's tomb. She is believed to have died
around 1333 or 1330 BC, and may have helped rule Egypt while Tutankhamun
was a boy. he certainly couldn't have ruled at age 9, and it is unsure
who helped him make decisions during the early years of his reign. The
current hypothesis is Ay, but it all really depends on when the
reigning queen, Nefertiti, died. if she was alive she would have ruled
in Tutankhamun's place for those early ears.
Actually, there currently is a mummy that is in dispute. There was a
mummy of a queen found in, I want to say KV-35, that was originally
believed to be Nefertiti, and was later ruled to be someone else. The
precise identity is unknown, but current thinking is that it might be
the body of Tutankhamun's mother, the queen before Nefertiti, who died
young. Thus Nefertiti would have actually raised King Tut in his early
years as his step mother.
I might want to also point out the KV-64 site is not the only area that
is of interest. Archaeologists have recently announced they think there
is another undiscovered tomb between KV-5 and KV-7 that might be
Ramesses VIII. If so that will get the KV-64 designation if it is
uncovered first. All depends on where they start digging.
Cheers.
