Just give the player a command option to view the monster before combat.
While you're reading the stats/desc, the game's not moving.
Those who don't care about those things can just avoid using that command.

No, it would take too much time forthe stats to be read. By the time it's
done, you'll be a splash of goo on the wall.

As for the ammo problem, the game wouldn't be a challenge if you had
vertually unlimited ammo. That is why weapons like the sword and dagger are
there.
