I call it 2D since while you didn't move directions like north, south east
and west, you did move up down, left and right.
Reason specifically liked things like worms is that they're more short
term/time games - so at the end of a session, it's done with and you can
start another one to play for around 20 minutes/30 minutes against various
other people, whereas if we, back then played things like warcraft,
starcraft, the MS age of empires games etc., we could in fact carry on for
hours, etc. etc.
Not a bad thing, but sometimes we just wanted to mess around for shorter
time periods, to waste a bit of time, and they sort of required less
concentration inbetween turns since while you kept track of what the other
were doing, you literally just waited until it was your turn again, so could
do something like go make coffee while the other people played, and then
come back, quickly scan what had happened, and then take your turn - very
informal LAN gaming.
Was also just thinking about less historical, and more simple entertainment
levels of content...<smile>
Stay well

Subject: Re: [Audyssey] Thinking about TOC and other sorts of strategy
games-but sort of animal versions
I remember both worms and lemmings, having played both cooperatively with
friends who were pretty big fans of the game.
I'm not sure about the 2D interface, sinse it very much required lots of
overview, ---- but something with an overview map in the manner of Toc I
see as eminantly possible, --- though i must confess if David does
considder using the Toc basics to create another game, my vote would be
for something like civilization, ---- having all the war pluss
developement of technology over time, trading, resources and
building, ---- the research element of civ always sounded fascinating to
me, going literally from sticks and stones to nuclear weapons and beyond.
Beware the gruE!
