I'm not sure. I wouldn't count shades as having an in game story because it doesn't have any actual characters or events you interact with.

true, it has the various objectives and interactions with the environment, but these seem more like puzles than a story to me.

Then again though, there are works of interactive fiction which work purely on puzles too and have no characters to interact with (several of the eamon games certainly do). I suppose though when you get to that sort of stage it's a matter of degree, rather than a simple has/has not type of distinction.

The part about shades not having an in game story, dark, is not quite
correct. I consider, myself, that a game having a series of objectives,
like shades, to have an in game story.

Actually Muhammed, Shades of doom is not.

The main way you progress in shades is through action and quick use of your
weapons and targiting. There is no character progression, no experience or
statistics, and no in game story, quests or other events.

Shades is an action/adventure game.

Thus far the only audio rpg's we have are entombed and the last crusade.

For an example, shades of doom is a roleplaying game.

Rpg stands for role playing game, and can refer generallly to any game
(on computer or off it), in which you play a role in an interactive story

or experience with use of statistics.

Rpgs have quite some history, but generally they started becoming popular

in the 1970's, --- though those were tabletop games like dungeons and
dragons, rather than played on a computer.

Mud, on the other hand stands for multiple user dungeon (or dimention
depending upon whome you ask), and refers to text adventure games played
specifically on a computer in which several users in put commands and
control characters on a sentralized server, rather than one player
running through a text adventure program on a computer.

it thus has a far narrower meaning than rpg, ---- indeed there are far
more rpgs than muds.

I wonder what RPG stands for? Is it not like a MUD?
