I haven't gone through all of the Emails about how to get the chain saw, but
haven't gotten it yet. Then again, I've only played the game 3 times. I
have been able to jump 9 barrels without it, though. I hear a sound sort of
like a wood pecker. Is that the chain saw by chance? There is no option to
hear the game sounds, which may be helpful.

Here you go.
Level 1 keys
Left arrow key = run left
Right arrow key = run right
Left control key = jump
Left shift key = duck
P key = pause and unpause on all levels except for level 5
Level 1 objective
After you dismount your donkey, you run up the jungle path to the top of
the mountain where Gonk has taken Marge.
Level 1 hints
You will jump farther while you are running.
Duck to avoid the giant bird and to pick up the chainsaw.
You can duck or jump while carrying the chainsaw.
