Hi tom.
funnily enough much as you describe windows 8 is my feeling with windows 7,
stuff chucked all over the place, context sensative this and that and those
stupid ribbons, it just feels all complexity for no gain. yes, I could use
the search pane, but that is essentially circumventing the interface rather
than interacting with it and still wouldn't let me treat the interface as I
wish, as a bookshelf. if I am going to bennifit from a new ui, let it be for
something I can't do with xp, ---- ie, use a touch screen.
I don't think however the touch screen/keyboard thing is an either or, sinse
even if every computer came with a touch screen, keyboards will still be
needed for writing on, whether that's word processing, E-mails, programming,
taking notes or whatever, so the ui will I think always have some facility
for that reason, indeed, even though I don't plan to do any major writing on
my Iphone, I will be picking up a bluetooth keyboard for it (probably the
logitech one), just to keep my options open, sinse even though I didn't find
the on screen keyboard completely unusable as some people have, I wouldn't
want to do a long bit of typing (even something like this mail), on one.
So hopefully microsoft will sort themselves out about windows 8 keyboard
support by the time it matters, sinse I know for a fact on screen keyboards
just aren't right for everyone.
I will say though I do appreciate as a vi computer user the ability to use a
touch screen for my os, indeed it sort of extends the physical bookshelf
idea I use now in one sense. It also has some great accessible game related
applications, for instance as we have been discussing remakes of old arcade
games, imagine playing a remake of something like robotron or smash tv where
you could physically run your finger around the screen to control your
character, and tap to shoot. no need for wall sounds sinse the relative
movements would tell you where your character was, you could even circle
around groups of robots and strafe as was the main tactic in the game, as
the additional information of your characters' location in the arena would
mean all the audio would need to convey was position of the robots, which
could allow for a far faster and more challenging game.
Windows 7 I just found completely frustratting on the occasion i tried it,
and while I could! probably find ways around circumventing most of the
frustrations, I'd always feel that I was essentially getting nothing.
the Ios interface on the phone however is an utterly different animal,
sinse there, despite apple's less than friendly business practices, I do!
feel I'm getting some distinct bennifits that I wouldn't get out of another
system such as a windows tablet, and I'm in fact quite excited about the
possibilities of this sort of new technology in the future.
beware the grue!
Dark.
