Hello Arnt & fellows,

Here is my translation of this text:

Cars with wood gasifiers were a familiar sight on roads in Finland during the war and after the war.

Wood gas vehicle development work began, however, already earlier and Finland was at the forefront of development.
Petrol was rationed and it was necessary to develope replacements for it.
Help was found in wood gasifier, more commonly known as "Häkäpönttö" ( = "carbonmomoxide jar")

"Why do to enrich the oil countries while our own forests are full of wood," instructed in the accompanying film from 1938. Wood gasifier used wood chips or charcoal as fuel. Even the use of peat was studied.

In wood gasifier cars the engine power was low, however. Driving is often interrupted because of interference.
Bus passengers often had to push a car uphill.

In the accompanying film, although reassured that the car survives in the traffic as smoothly as a petrol driven car.

About 43000 wood gasifier cars were produced during the war.Wood gasifiers secured through traffic to continue.

Gasoline rationing ended in early 1949. Wood gasifiers were then removed from traffic.

Now a possibiliy use wood gas again as an alternative fuel for cars has been brouht out.

....

Some explanation of the film.

To my knowledge, the idea was to produce comressed wood coal or peat coal briquettes for gasifiers, which have better and more even quality and higher energy content that wood. This would have been done in indutrial scale and the by-products like tar would have been used as raw material source for chemical industry ect. If this kind of factory were situated near other factory like paper mill, or near big city, the excess heat could have been able to used as heat source for paper drying or heating houses. Ofcource all this did not realize because cheap petrol was available again.

Hello all,

This clip is from 1938, when also in Finland it appeared that gas
would not be easily available in the future.Wood, however we did have
and still have a lot.
This test demonstrates that the truck motor could give the same motor
power with wood gas as with gas, if the wood gas is comressed with
mechanical turbochager. It is interesting to see, how simple
intruments were used for defining power, pressure difference etc,
mostly based on natures of law insted of comlicated electrical
systems as it is today.

..Olli, the missing Google translation bits, please:
Häkäpöntöt were a familiar sight on roads in Finland during the war and

Säännösteltiin to replace petrol and had to develop alternative ways.
Assistance found namely puukaasuttimesta tututummin carbon monoxide
from the pulpit.

"Why do to enrich the oil countries in their own forests are full of
wood," instructed in the accompanying film, completed in 1938.

Häkäpöntöissä twinkle used as fuel, wood chips or charcoal. Even the
use of peat were studied.

Häkäpöntöillä cars with engine power, however, was weak. Driving is
often interrupted because of interference. Coach passengers often had
to push a car uphill.

In the accompanying film, although reassured that the car survives the
gas transport as deftly as bensiinikäyttöinenkin car.

Puukaasuttimilla cars are produced during the war, about 43 000
Häkäpönttöjen secured through traffic to continue.

Gasoline rationing ended in early 1949. Häkäpöntöt were removed from
circulation.

Now, wood gas has suggested the possibility of re-alternative fuel.
