Unemployment is at 7%.  In the 30’s it was 25%.

That being said, I don’t know a single family not impacted by this.  Building industry is talking about 5-7 quarters before we see a recovery, commerce is talking 4-6 quarters before any recovery has an impact.

...and if you believe the fear mongers, it could get worse. Concealed Weapon Permit applications are at an all-time high. Looks like we may be returning either to the old west or Chicago in the 30's... :(

Thanks everybody for the encouraging words (although, working for a company that makes IT software....uffff...guess just need to ride it out for now!).

I think for a quarter, I am going to not contribute to 401K (I am sure Jay sez NO!)...company match has been suspended too. Will just wait and watch.

I am really sorry to hear about your difficulties.  Jnene, I was envious about your husband’s job at the Union.  I had thought about doing something like that when I retire.  No raises for that long has to be stressing the family budget.  Badrish, that is a big pay cut, but I guess the alternative might be Randy’s situation.  Someone told me recently that companies were cutting back on their IT but I did not believe it.  I guess I was wrong.

I serve a the treasurer for a multiple county community foundation where we manage a significant amount of money.  Today I had a meeting of the investment committee and we met with our three different account managers.  It was not pretty.  I had anticipated the bad news in our equity portfolio, but some of the fixed has experienced losses as well. I could not imagine A bond portfolios losing money, but there were some companies that went bankrupt and some barely on life support (AIG)..  Go figure.  I thought thing were horrible until I realized that they were reporting on December 31 year end totals.  Since then we have probably lost another 7-9%.  Unfortunately, there will be a lot less scholarships awarded this year.

There was a consensus from all three experts (perhaps I should say so called experts since they did not adequately hedge protect the portfolio) that the market should level out at the end of the first quarter with the economy  showing positive GNP growth by the third quarter.  I pray they are correct.

By the way, for those of you who have fled the equity market and are holding bonds, I instructed our fund managers to shorten the average maturities of the fixed markets to target no more than two – three years.  I am very worried that our national debt will come home to roost and we could see some significant inflation in 2-3 years.  If I am correct, the bond market will be hit hard.

According to Gatorcountry the charges were supposed to be dropped in court yesterday.  I don't know if that's what happened because I haven't been near a computer yet today to find out.

I really don't understand how someone would be date-raped three times. Isn't
a date-rape that you voluntarily went on a date with someone and then were
raped by the person you were on a date with? So, after that happened, she
went out on another date with the same guy who had raped her on the first
date? Why would any woman do that? And then, after being raped again on the
second date, she went out yet a third time with a guy who had raped her
twice before? That would be stupid beyond belief.

Remember that he is being accused, but has not been charged - nor has the

The hearing is a civil matter on whether or not to continue a restraining

I'd say typical spin from a poodle paper, but our local rag has been almost
as sensational, and just as misleading with their headlines.

I'm not sure where I read this, but I recall that the restraining order was
asked for months after their relationship had ended and in response to
Johnson dating another woman.

While that does not invalidate the allegations, it sure makes me skeptical.

I'm also a little puzzled as to the likelihood of a woman being susceptible
to date rape on three separate occasions.

I'd wager that Johnson comes out looking pretty good once all the facts are
known.
