Yeah, I'm pretty sure you cannot make your own DVDs with an HDMI input.
That's because you could make virtually a mirror image of a commercial DVD,
and Hollywood doesn't want that. 

 

Using 'component' signals (the red-green-blue plugs) or 'composite' (the
yellow plug), or S-Video is the only way to make your own DVD copy of a
television program from your DVR.  HDMI isn't possible...I'm reasonably
certain.

 

I'll try DVR-ing another Sun Sports program, and see if it also is
protected.  I'll try an ESPN hoops game, too.  Watch this space.

Mine has an HDMI output, but a composite input. I WOULD help with
troubleshooting, but I don't get Sun Sports. All of the ESPN and CBS gator
games transfer from DVR to DVD just fine for me.
