Rob, As I think about a school getting the death penalty, UM would be the likely profile. SMU while have some national exposure was still a relatively small operation. In many ways it is very similar in character to Miami. The only other schools to get death penalties since SMU (two others) were very small programs. Interestingly the first school to get the death penalty was the University of Kentucky Basketball team in 1952 involving paying players and players taking bribes for point shaving. More interestingly, the penalties were even more severe for the players. Not only was their college careers ended, the NBA (precursor) banned the players from the league for life. If the allegations in the Yahoo story are all true, then it is easily within the realm of what the death penalty is for. You'd have to ask, if this doesn't earn the death penalty, then exactly what DO you have to do? Run a drug trafficing cartel? Kidnap young girls and sell them into slavery? What? This is so egregious, so flauntingly out of control, so contemptuous if the rules the rest of us live by, that anything less would make a mockery of the NCAA and it's rules. Yet, despite what seems to me to be an obvious case, I will be amazed if the NCAA has the guts actually to pull the trigger. The name synonymous with their last major issue and beat down. They are smirking at the authority... I don't give a crap. Drop the hammer. I'd rather they just get crippling sanctions that would make them struggle to get to three wins every year - which currently, isn't that far of a fall anyway. We'd get more of the guys out of Miami that we really want, and the others can go cause trouble at FSU, USF, UCF, FIU, et. al. There's been a lot of talk about the death penalty for Miami, and while I don't think the NCAA has enough spine to actually invoke it, I started thinking about what might happen in relation to the Gators. At SMU, I seem to recall that the players were allowed to transfer without penalty. I would assume it would happen in this case too. If so, I would expect to see more transfer to FSU or USF than UF. That would give FSU a solid pipeline in South Florida, and possibly make USF a major player in college football. FSU establishing a steady flow of talent from Miami could make them a national "it" team again. USF could start keeping more of the Tampa talent at home if they become the third of the Big 3. Neither situation plays out well for UF. While I would love to see scUM obliterated by the NCAA, I selfishly have to wonder whether it would be better for us if they just get serious scholarship reductions. While this would still redirect some players to other schools, there wouldn't be the wholesale diaspora, and long-term, it would be better for the Gators.
