PROBLEM
1) My cookie and script permissions have always been set to allow-all for
gmail.
2) I have two machines with identical installs (they're clones of each
other made a
week before this stopped working) and this only happened on one of them.
3) This problem began occurring *after* I encountered *another* problem:
3a) This problem was: Offline gmail *died* out of the blue.
3b) It wouldn't load. Just gave me a blank page. No html, js, etc. This was
the
*loaded* url of it, not an about:blank page prior to navigation.
3c) I has on https, cookies and scripts were fine, and again, a cloned
machine with
identical settings was working perfectly fine on the exact same account and
configuration on offline gmail.
3d) This problem persisted in firefox safe mode.
3e) Google calenders exhibited the same "blank screen" behaviour.
4) This current problem occurred after an attempted reinstallation in
trying to solve
(3).
5) This current problem persisted through multiple attempts. This problem
persisted
in firefox safe mode.
SOLUTION
1) On firefox 3.5, I solved my problem by uninstalling gears and deleting
the gears
directory from the firefox profile.
2) The subsequent re installation proceeded as meant to, as if I started
from scratch.
3) I did not modify any other settings. Firefox was operating in normal
mode with all
add-ons and configurations identical to before this problem or the problem
mentioned
in (Problem:3), emerged.
4) The downside from all this is lost time, and also I had to re-download
all my
mail, and instead of being able to retain 3 years, could only retain 2.
DISCUSSION
1) This leads me to believe the problem in both (Problem:4) and this thread
lies in a
corruption of the google gears database.
2) We can successfully eliminate browser and add-on configurations and
settings from
the problem due to the normal operation of identical conditions
(Problem:3c, Problem:2).
3) We can also rule out this issue being localized to gmail offline as it
is also
exhibited by calender (Problem:3e).
4) We can also rule out corruption in the google gears software kernel as
the
re-installation in all cases was from a single installation package.
5) There is an inherent flaw in the transactions with the offline database
that may
cause people to experience both this problem and the other mentioned.
6) This is a problem with a chance of being severe in random occurrences.
This
problem cannot be duplicated (see the fact that I had cloned setups).
