Along the same line, I've been wondering if folks are getting better performance out
ballast-type fixtures as opposed to the electronic
ballasts. I've been having horrible luck with the electronic ballast
fixtures with regard to bulb life. Although Greg may be right and it may
actually be that the fixture is right on top of the cage.

I noticed dropping the bulbs to decrease bulb life dramatically. I popped
two yesterday......
I wouldnt think it makes that much or a difference in bulb life. I would
make sure the lid is all metal though, I have melted more than a few
plastic frame types....yeah Im pretty dim.
