If used with the proper fluorescent tube (usually T8) electronic ballasts
will dramatically increase the time between bulb changes. Most electronic
ballasts operate at a much higher frequency than standard magnetic ballasts
which also helps to reduce the flicker effect. We use lots of electronic
ballasts for our daygecko lighting, some enclosures have four bulbs above
them so efficient lighting and long life is very important. Here is a link
that explains how ballasts work including electronic.
